Antagonistic exercise support system using depth image sensor

(in English) Japan is rapidly becoming a super-aged society, and good preventative care for elderly people is becoming increasingly important. The goals of preventative care are to stave off the need for long-term care as long as possible, and to prevent one's condition from deteriorating in cases where care is already required. Dementia is one of diseases that need long-term care, and it seems to be effective that long-term health activities slow the progress of the disease. Antagonistic exercise is one of health activities for dementia which makes a different motion on the left and right hands or different motion on hands and legs. In this study, we have developed a system to support antagonistic exercises using Kinect. The system incorporates several support functions and rhythm game. The support functions include a user guide with video and audio. The rhythm game is a function that would enhance spontaneity and encourage users to persist with the exercise routine. Trials were conducted to assess the recognition accuracy of the system, and we asked the subjects to fill out a questionnaire evaluating the system's usability to assess the effectiveness of the support functions.
