| (in English) | The abundance of research on theory-of-mind development in young children has led to several meta-analyses on this topic, one of which has examined the effect of culture. It is known that children from the Australian culture pass standard false-belief tasks at the earliest point in development, whereas children from Japan pass the tasks the latest. Naito and Koyama (2006) have attributed this delay in development to the limited use of mental state words in the Japanese language. Because children's theory-of-mind development is intimately linked to language input from the mother, it is essential to first investigate whether there are differences in adults' use of mental state language across cultures. In the present study, we therefore compared adults from two different cultures-- Australia and Japan. | |
