Proposal of link layer structure for LTE-WLAN aggregation in LTE-Advanced/5G network

(in English) In LTE-advanced (LTE-A), which is standardized by 3rd Generation partnership Project (3GPP), an enhancement of the system architecture is studied in order to enable the wireless access to collaborate with other radio access systems taking 5th generation mobile communications into consideration. In particular, collaboration with Wireless LAN (WLAN) which widely spreads all over the world becomes an important challenge. The LTE-A wireless access by collaborating with WLAN in the link layer (layer 2) level is referred to as LTE-WLAN aggregation. In LTE-WLAN aggregation, one of the important challenges is the layer 2 structure for transmitting the LTE-A data by identifying the LTE-A call (bearer) and keeping the Quality of Service (QoS) of LTE-A bearer over the WLAN. It is indispensable that the layer 2 structure must ensure the backward compatibility of the layer 2 structure of LTE-A and the layer 2 structure doesn’t have any impact on the specifications of WLAN. In this technical report, in order to address this issue, three layer 2 structures are proposed. By comparing the characteristics of the proposed three layer 2 structures, desirable layer 2 structures are clarified depending on scenarios in LTE-WLAN aggregation.
