Brain--computer interfaces (BCIs) can be categorized into two types by its operational protocol: synchronous BCI and asynchronous BCI. With the synchronous BCI, a user executes a command when a cue is given by the BCI system. On the contrary, with the asynchronous (self-paced) BCI, the timing of operation is dependent on the user, thus a command can be inputted when the user intends to do so. In the asynchronous BCIs, a state when the user does not intend to input commands needs to be considered. This state is typically called non-control (NC) state while a state when the user intents to input commands is called intentional control (IC) state. In this paper, we propose a new method of discrimination between the IC and the NC states using canonical correlation analysis (CCA) for steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based asynchronous BCIs. The method has following steps; first, a SSVEP frequency is recognized with CCA; next, a phase space is reconstructed from a recorded signal using the time-delay embedding method, and CCA is applied at each embedding dimension to extract features; last, using these features, the state of a user is detected as IC or NC with a classifier such as support vector machine (SVM). The proposed method was tested on six healthy subjects and has been proved to have much better performance than a conventional method in terms of sensitivity and specificity. |
