Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) For the recent explosive spread of smartphones in the world, the possibility
of novel services using smartphone has been explored. As an example of this,
there is iBeacon proposed by Apple, Inc. This service uses beacon modules
emitting radio waves based on Bluetooth Low Energy technology and provides us
automatic triggering of information transfer to smartphones at proximity.
Typical use case of iBeacon is for automatic information transfer of in-store
advertizing and couponing.
On the other hand, if the contents of triggered information can be changed
depending on moving directions of smartphone users, it will open up a new
direction to more various use cases of iBeacon, such as human route guidance.
In this paper, we propose a system for detecting moving direction of humans
using iBeacon. In this system, beacon modules play two types of role: detection
and response. Depending on the history of automatic triggering of beacon modules
for response, a smartphone application changes the contents of information on
the display screen when the smartphone user come close to a beacon module for
detection.
By allocating these beacon modules appropriately along passage ways in a building,
the system enables the detection of human moving direction.
We made a prototype application for detecting moving direction run on Android OS
to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. As a result, we found that
it is possible to detect human moving direction and route guidance with allocating
beacon modules and creating the application after taking into account the context
of human mobility patterns in the building.
