Wavelength selective switch (WSS) is a key module to configure a reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer. High port count WSSs increase the add/drop ratio in optical network nodes. Increasing port count and supporting the flexible-grid function of the WSS can improve the flexibility and efficiency of optical networks. We have developed a flexible-grid 1x40 WSS using liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS), and achieved low insertion loss of 9.5 dB, average 0.5 dB bandwidth of 36.8 GH (aligned to 50 GHz grid) and bandwidth flexibility of 6.25 GHz resolution. |
