The efficiency of a continuous wave, laser diode pumped Yb:YAG laser were investigated theoretically. The efficiency will be increased by high gain operation due to high intensity pumping, however, the influence on the thermo-optic effect due to high intensity pumping should be investigated. The analysis included the quasi-four level laser theory and a cavity design with thermal focusing due to high intensity pumping. By using the thermal focusing and pump beam aberrations, the maximum output power of 1.42 W was obtained at an incident pump power of 1.77 W. The corresponding optical to optical conversion efficiency and slope efficiency were 80.4% and 84.5%, respectively. |
