By using cold neutral atomic ensemble in a high-finesse cavity, we can achieve atomic ensemble interacting strongly even with a single photon. Moreover, the behavior in this regime can be utilized as variable types of effective interaction between photons. The phenomenon of vacuum-induced-transparency, which can be achieved with these cavity technique, has both high transparency and high sensitivity to small number of photons. Developing this idea further, we suggests non-demolition optical switch which can be driven with a single photon, and we discuss its experimental feasibility. |
