Edge light drives are on the mainstream in present laptop PCs, although backlight of this kind is unsuitable for outdoor use because of lack of light power. A backlight array was altered to a direct drive type to be suited for use in the environment outdoors on the study as well as the increased number of LEDs used for backlight. The light power from the backlight was designed adjustable corresponding to the light intensity dynamically needed from the respective liquid crystal pixels. The issues arising from the temperature rise of the LCD array were solved by the "forcible heat exchange" in which refresh air was taken with a miniature fan of new type.
