It is well-known for every binary state system to be decomposed into a family of series systems or of parallel systems and be able to be coposed by taking $max$ or $min$ of them, using the minimal path or cut sets. These decomposition and composition are used to give usefull stochastic evaluation methods for binary state systems. In this paper we show that a multi-state sytem is decomposed into a family of multi-state series systems, which means that the family of all series and parallel sytems is a basis as for the binary state case, and the structure function of the multi-state system is expressed by taking $max$ of the series systems or $min$ of the parallel systems. Furthermore, using the decoposition, we show a stochastic bounds for reliability performances of a multi-state system. |
