A Study on Relationship between Rain Area Velocities and Rain Attenuation Observations at 3 Locations in Ku-Band Satellite Communications Links

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Speeds and directions of the motion of rain areas that cause the attenuation of Ku-band satellite communications links are estimated from the broadcast satellite (BS) signal levels simultaneously obtained at Osaka Electro-Communication University (Neyagawa, Osaka), Research Institute of Sustainable Humanosphere of Kyoto University (Kyoto, Uji), and Shigaraki MU Observatory (Shiga, Koga). The speeds and directions of rain area motion are compared with those of rain fronts obtained from image analyses of real time weather charts published in the website by Japan Meteorological Agency for 112 rainfall events during the years of 2007-2012. In the case of warm and cold fronts, the speeds and directions of the rain area motions estimated from the BS signal observations are comparatively in good agreement with those of rain fronts obtained from the real time weather charts of the website. In the case of stationary fronts, however, the speeds of the rain area motions by the BS signals are much slower than the speeds of rain front motions by the real time weather charts, while the directions of the rain area motions are still in fairly good agreement with the directions of the rain front motions by the website. So, the information of real time weather charts that is readily obtained from websites compared with those printed in newspapers seem to be useful for more effective operation of site diversity techniques in a number of earth stations.
