GaInAsP photonic crystal nanolaser is used as a bio-sensor because its laser characteristics are sensitive to the environmental index and surface charge. By functionalizing with a receptor, the lasing wavelength is changed by the adsorption of target molecules from a detection limit 2‒3 orders lower than current methods'. We succeeded in detecting PSA and CRMP2, which are actual biomarkers for prostatic cancer and Alzheimer's diseases. Even with neither labels nor spectroscopy, the nanolaser can detect negatively-charged DNA from the emission intensity, which will simplify the screening procedure greatly. It is also applicable to the detection of endotoxin and label-fee imaging of living cells using nanolaser array. |
