A Cul-de-Sac coupling matrix can be obtained by matrix transformation from a transversal array coupling matrix that can synthesize a bandpass filter with transmission zeros (TZs) at arbitrary frequencies, and also it does not need a multi-branch circuit for excitation. So far a waveguide filter and a two-layer microstrip filter have been reported to provide the Cul-de-Sac coupling matrix, but the Cul-de-Sac coupling matrix has not been realized by a single-layer planar structure yet. In this paper, we propose a single-layer planar microstrip structure to implement a fully canonical Cul-de-Sac coupling matrix that can produce the maximum number of TZs. For the filter design considering a frequency-dependent direct S/L coupling, a circuit synthesis with the help of optimization technique is introduced, so that a bandpass filter can be easily designed with evaluation of coupling coefficient and external Q factor. As an example, we design a bandpass filter with 2-GHz center frequency, 6% bandwidth in passband, and four TZs located very near the passband, resulting in very high skirt selectivity. Finally, the validity of the proposed structure is verified by the comparison between the simulated and measured results. |
