We present a method for measuring the strain formed in a circumferential direction in ring structures; this method is based on the strain dependence of the Brillouin gain (BG) spectrum frequency shift. The BG spectra produced in an optical fiber installed on the ring circumference are distributedly observed; the strain is then obtained by fitting the model to the observed BG spectra. This model comprises parameters related to the basic properties of the BGS shape and strain dependence of the frequency shift, BGS observation conditions, and the ring circumferential strain. Because the strain is given by a periodic function of period 2$pi$ in the same cross-section, the strain is described by Fourier descriptors in the model. The suitability of this method is confirmed by simulation. |
