Image Contrast Enhancement by Interpolative Histogram Specification

(in English) We propose a method for enhancing the contrast of grayscale images by interpolative histogram specification, which transforms the histogram of an input image into a target one which is calculated from the equalized one that frequently has 0-valued bins. The target histogram is obtained by filling the 0-valued bins with nonzero values by interpolation. Experimental results show that the proposed method can enhance the image contrast by suppressing false contours which often appear on conventionally histogram-equalized images.
