Effect of postures on the impression of facial expressions
Yukino Shintaku, Nobuyuki Watanabe (KIT) HCS2015-86
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The present study investigated how postures affect the impression of facial expressions of emotion. The pictures of female and male who perform one of the four facial expressions (smile, surprise, anger, and neutral) and one of the eight kinds of postures were used as materials. Participants were asked to rate the pictures in terms of the semantic differential (SD) technique. A factor analysis revealed two factors of “valence” and “activity.” The placements of the pictures in the factor space showed that the impression of facial expressions might be affected by postures. A multiple regression analysis showed that both of the two factors were positively correlated with the familiarity with the person.
