An energy-efficient transmission mechanism with considerations of QoS required by real-time applications in wireless LANs

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Energy saving is one of main concerns in wireless LAN communications. As wireless LAN technologies become popular, many users have used different types of applications simultaneously. In such a situation, flows that have different size of packets and requirements for quality of service (QoS) coexist on a single wireless device, which changes over time. Sending some packets in a bursty fushion, called burst transmission, is effective for energy saving. However, burst transmission can incur additional delay jitter since it buffers packets until a certain fixed number of them arrives from applications. As a result, this can degrade the quality of the real-time applications. Furthermore, small size of packets also degrade sleep efficiency due to the degradation of frame transmission efficiency. Therefore, we need a solution to improve energy efficiency in the above situations while satisfying the QoS required by the real-time applications. In this report, we propose a QoS-aware energy-efficient transmission method in order to save energy while satisfying QoS required by real-time applications. It exploits burst transmission scheduling and packet packing. For saving further energy while satisfying the QoS requirement, it schedules the burst transmission timing based on the QoS requirement. It also aggregates some buffered packets into a single packet to improve energy efficiency by reducing the transmission overheads at the MAC-layer. Through the evaluations, we demonstrate that the proposed method can save energy while satisfying the QoS requirement.
