Write Optimization for SSDs using Workload-aware Cache Allocation

(in English) In using low-cost SSDs, reduction in the amount of write data is an important problem for extending lifetime. It is also important to prevent space fragmentation for avoiding performance degradation. These problems can be alleviated by the increase of the capacity of write cache. However, excessive capacity allocation for writes causes the shortage of read cache capacity. To allocate appropriate cache capacity for reads and writes dynamically, this paper introduces a scheme that allocates adequate capacity at first for data read from hosts repeatedly. Then this scheme allocates all the rest cache capacity for writes to maximize the capacity of write cache with keeping read performance. Evaluation result shows that the proposed scheme reduces write data to SSDs 38%, and alleviates space fragmentation of SSDs by extending the size of sequential writes 49% on average.
