Implementation of Fast Edge-preserving Smoothing Filter based on Image Gradient on a Hardware/Software Co-design System

(in English) Edge-preserving smoothing is the processing that smooths unnecessary small amplitude signals with keeping primal edges in an image. Generally, it takes a lot of time on power saving CPUs used in embedded systems. To cope with this problem, we implement a simple edge-preserving smoothing filter on an FPGA as a custom circuit. Furthermore, by letting the FPGA with the CPU, a hardware/software (hw/sw) co-design system is structured to increase accessibility to this circuit. In this study, our target to be implemented is a simple infinite impulse response filter based on image gradient. We convert it into a set of equations and their fixed-point description suitable for hardware implementation. The results of its implementation on the actual hw/sw system are evaluated from viewpoints of the processing time, the quantization error, etc.
