A Yes/No communication aid using infrared light for totally locked-in ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) patients has been studied. Two experiments utilizing a patient’s touch sensation were done; one used his wife’s hand and the other a baseball ball made of Styrofoam. These experiments were compared with a basic experiment without using touch sensation. While the ball experiment showed no significant difference on the average accuracy rate, his wife’s hand experiment showed 69.5% accuracy rate (36 trials), that was about 14% higher accuracy rate and significant with 5% significant level. |
