Evaluation of neural responses driven by implantable micro magnetic stimulation using optical imaging of intrinsic signals in the auditory cortex

(in English) Electromagnetic stimulation is widely used for neuromodulation, and it has been successful in the clinical treatments such as Parkinson’s disease and tinnitus. However, conventional electromagnetic stimulation methods have several limitations to overcome even in such clinical applications. Recent studies have reported the possibility that micro magnetic stimulation (μMS) can surmount such limitations, so that a μMS device could become an alternative neuromodulation apparatus. However, most previous studies examined μMS effects on evoked responses of single neurons, and little has been known about how the μMS can affect brain tissues including local neural networks. In this study, we proposed an implantable μMS interface and evaluated whether the interface could drive neural responses using flavoprotein autofluorescence imaging. The imaging technique captured the fluorescence change of intrinsic signals in the mouse auditory cortex in vivo. Our results demonstrated that the interface could actually induce the propagation of μMS-driven response activity in local neural networks beyond restricted activation of single neurons.
