Measuring the center of pressure (CoP) during quiet standing is one of the standard ways to evaluate postural control. However, the traditional experimental set up for measuring CoP (with a force plate & analysis software) has several drawbacks: the equipment cost for both hard- and software is quite high and the equipment is usually not portable. Recently, the Nintendo Wii balance board (WBB) has been used for basic and applied (rehabilitation field) research, having the capability of measuring CoP at a relatively low cost. As the WBB was designed as a TV game, this has led to some discussion about its validity, with some research papers reporting that it is inadequate for research purposes requiring high-precision analyses. In the present study, we investigated the reliability and validity of the WBB for measuring quiet standing. CoP was measured and compared using a WBB and a research-grade force plate (Kistler Co.). Our results showed that the main concern with the WBB is the uneven sampling rate, with the time between sampling varying in a range of 1 and 35 ms. However, with proper low-pass (< 20Hz) filtering and the use of re-sampling technique, the WBB can provide accurate CoP measurements, making it a low-cost alternative to the force plate. Our findings suggest that given appropriate data sampling and analyses, the WBB is a useful tool, especially for clinical studies or when a traditional set up is impractical. |
