On the effect of noise on a mathematical model of the pancreatic beta cell

(in English) The membrane potential of pancreatic beta cells changes its value in accordance with insulin secretion. In normal beta cells, the change of membrane potential shows periodic bursting, while the bursting of cells in diabetes patients is not periodic, namely the insulin secretion is disordered. In this study, the dynamics of the membrane potential is reproduced by numerical simulation of a mathematical model, and the effect of noise on the model is investigated.
As a result of the simulation, we confirm that the number of spikes which corresponds to insulin secretion increases due to noise. We also confirm that the stronger the noise amplitude is, the more the number of spikes increases.
Furthermore, the number of spikes more increases for the parameters of the model in which the bursting is not periodic than for that of periodic bursting. This result implies that noise stimulation can promote the amount of insulin secretion for the disordered beta cell compared with the normal cell. Thus, the noisy stimulation would be useful for the remedy for diabetes.
