Insight problem solving, in which a path to solution suddenly appears, and trial-and-error problem solving are considered to belong to completely different classes of problem solving. Thus, both types of problem solving are independently discussed in the respective fields, in relation to information exploration. In this research, we investigate whether these types of problem solving have common cognitive substrates. For this purpose, we conducted an experiment involving the following tasks; Matchstick Arithmetic task as an insight problem solving task and Gambling task as a trial-and-error problem solving task. We found that the tendency to explore information was correlated with the performance of the two tasks in the opposite way. The results suggest that the common cognitive process of information exploration could differently influence the paths to solution both in insight problem solving and in trial-and-error problem solving. |
