In case of outdoor settings, IoT (Internet of Things) devices such as sensors often use low data-rate wireless channels to realize a long distance and inexpensive communications; a considerable packet losses happen due to obstacles and fading etc.
On the other hand,
numerical data obtained from sensors allow different levels of accuracy depending on the purpose of use,
and do not require strict lossless compression.
In this report, therefore, we assume that
a sender compresses a sequence of integer values obtained from a sensor, stores it in multiple packets redundantly, and transmits it via a lossy wireless network,
while a receiver tries to reconstruct the original sensor data from the received packets.
Assuming a level of allowable errors in reconstructed sensor data at receiver,
we propose a joint data compression and packet-level forward recovery scheme to adapt to a low data-rate and a high loss-rate of the network path.
The proposed scheme performs a broken line approximation of the sensor data, and sends the polygonal line information (called the line data) with the amendment information on a part of differences between the polygonal line and individual original values (called the offset data).
Data generation rate of the sensor; data rate, packet loss rate, and packet size of the network path; an allowable error level of the application are considered to take a broken line approximation and to give different transmission redundancies to the line data and the offset data, respectively, to efficiently utilize a low available data-rate.
Its effectiveness is shown through simulation using data with different increasing patterns. |
