Adaptive BRDF Sampling Method Based on Between-model Variance

(in English) In this paper, we describe a reflectance reconstruction method based on a small number of measurements
in order to speed up reflectance measurement. Conventional method of reflectance measurement has a problem that
it takes a lot of time to complete because it is necessary to perform sampling repeatedly changing the direction of
light source and observation variously. In this paper, we propose a method to shorten the measurement time by
adaptively determining the measurement strategy after each sampling. In this method, the next sampling direction
is set as the sampling direction that maximizes the between-model variance based on the history of measured val-
ues, which enables to complete the measurement of reflectance with a small number of samplings. By conducting
simulation experiments on this method, we confirmed that this method can reconstruct reflectance precisely with a
small number of measurements adaptively for each material.
