Response properties of electrosensory fibers and movement behavior to sinusoidal electric stimulation in glass catfish

(in English) Glass catfish have the ability to sense the electric fields. Their electroreceptors are sensitive to around 10 – 20 Hz of sinusoidal electric signal. Spiking patterns of afferent peripheral nerves are modulated by external electric signal via the electroreceptors. The external electric signal affects behavioral movements of glass catfish. In the present study, we investigated responses of the afferent nerves in response to the sinusoidal electric stimulation and its associated behavioral swimming patterns. We also investigated dynamical property of spiking patterns. The sinusoidal stimulation induced the quasiperiodic patterns and phase-locked bursting patterns. In the behavioral experiments, avoidance movements were found in the low frequency range of the electric stimulation. This result implies that spiking patterns of the afferent nerves are related to the avoidance movement in response to the sinusoidal electrical stimulation.
