Impact of User Tolerance and Information Sharing on Distributed Route Selection in a Road Network

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Although the social-optimal route assignment minimizing the total traveling time among all users is important to mitigate traffic congestion in a road network, each user tends to select a selfish route that considers only its own traveling time. In our previous work, we revealed the impact of selfish user behavior and information sharing between a server and users on the total traveling time among all users on the existing distributed route selection scheme. However, we assumed that a certain number of users behaved selfishly at random. In actual systems, it is natural for a user to behave selfishly or cooperatively depending on his/her tolerance to the estimated traveling time of a social-optimal route given by a server. In this paper, we show the impact of user tolerance and information sharing on the existing distributed route selection scheme in terms of the total traveling time among users. Through numerical experiments, we show the server can suppress the emergence of selfish users and improve robustness against users' selfish behavior by notifying each user about social-optimal routes of all users.
