Previous studies showed that speech uttered in the environment with a long reverberation time is more intelligible for young adults than one with short reverberation time, and is hyper-articulated speech with less coarticulation effects and steeper formant transitions. This study examined whether the speech uttered in the environment with a long reverberation time is intelligible for elderly as well as young adults. Elderly with normal hearing level, and hearing impairment participated in the listening test. The experimental results showed that, as for young adults, the speech uttered in the environment with a long reverberation time was more intelligible for the listeners aged 60 years and older. This suggests that the speech modifications observed in the speech uttered in the environment with a long reverberation time are significant features for wide range of listeners to improve speech intelligibility in reverberant environments. |
