Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Humans can obtain specific information from a large amount of acoustic information inputted simultaneously and parallelly to both ears. This phenomenon is often labeled as the cocktail party effect. We have focused on auditory selective attention as one of the effective factors on that phenomenon. By directing the attention to some acoustic characteristics of the target sound, human can easily listen to the target sound. In this study, we investigated how the auditory spatial and temporal attention affects the listening performance in the presence of competing speeches, respectively. To examine the effects of auditory spatial and temporal attention quantitatively, word intelligibilities were measured under following four conditions: (1) spatio-temporal cue condition, (2) spatial cue condition, (3) temporal cue condition, and (4) without cue condition. Results showed that word intelligibilities improve approximately 5–10% by directing the attention to the target direction, while temporal cueing has no effect on word intelligibility. In addition, it was shown that the effect of attention decays over time.
