Optimization of core diameter for suppression of modal coupling in few-mode fiber connection

(in English) The modal couplings can be caused by the misalignment errors in few-mode fiber (FMF) connection. It is one of the most critical issue in the weakly-coupled mode-multiplexed transmission technique, in which the couplings between the different linearly polarized (LP) modes gives rise to signal crosstalk noise. The transversal misalignment in FMF connection has been already discussed. On the other hand, the modal coupling due to the angle misalignment has not been investigated because it is supposed to be negligible. As increasing the core diameter, the modal coupling due to the transversal misalignment would be reduced, but that due to the angle misalignment be enhanced. Since the core diameter of FMF is larger than that of a single-mode fiber (SMF), the angle misalignment should be considered in the FMF connection. In this paper, we numerically evaluate the modal crosstalk due to not only transversal misalignment but also angle misalignment in FMF connection. We clarify the optimal core diameter for minimizing the modal crosstalk due to misalignment in FMF connector. For the present connector accuracy, we calculate the minimum modal crosstalk and the optimal core diameter.
