Fundamental study for quantitative evaluation of fatty liver by multi-wavelength photoacoustic imaging

(in English) Quantification of fat rate of liver is useful for early detection of liver disease. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is anticipated for application to liver fat rate estimation. To achieve fat rate estimation, we developed a handheld PA system with a multi-wavelength laser. In this study, the usefulness of the system for estimate fat rate was verified in ex vivo experiments. Analysis using PA spectra revealed liver has peak PA intensity of around 900 nm; that of lipid is around 1210 nm, at which the light absorbance is high. To estimate the fat rate using photoacoustic methods, the photoacoustic signal intensity ratio between two wavelength regions was calculated as explained above. Signal intensity ratios agreed well with the liver-lipid composition ratio.
