This paper presents antenna gain enhancement of optical leaky wave antennas (OLWAs). The antenna gain of OLWA is proportional to the size of the aperture. The grating waveguide is ordinary employed as the structure of a leaky wave antenna. However, an effective aperture of GWG is limited for large perturbation. We have proposed a waffle waveguide (WWG) and a Waffle-iron waveguide (WIWG) which can suppress the perturbation as compared to the GWG and can realize a high antenna gain by enlarging an effective aperture size. A large size of taper waveguide is required to excite an OLWAs. We have proposed an arrayed taper waveguide and parabolic reflector to excite a OWLA to totally miniaturize a OLWA devices. These structures can excite the OLWA in half the size and 1/10 of the size, by arrayed taper waveguide and the reflector, respectively. A high antenna gain of 45 dBi is achieved by combination of the WWG and the reflector. |
