Driven by the emergence of new compute-intensive applications and the vision of the Internet of Things (IoT), it is
foreseen that the emerging 5G network and beyond will face an unprecedented increase in traffic volume and computation
demands. However, mobile devices usually have the limited storage capacities and finite processing capabilities, thus how to run
compute-intensive applications on resource-poor users has recently become a natural concern. Multi-access edge computing
(MEC), a key technology in the emerging 5G network, has been developed to optimize mobile resources by hosting computeintensive
computations and provide many other benefits. In doing so, MEC enables a wide variety of applications, where the
real-time response is strictly required, e.g., driverless vehicles, augmented reality, robotics, and immerse media. The realization
of MEC in the 5G network is still in its infancy and demands for constant efforts from both academic and industry communities.
While there are some existing surveys for MEC systems, they are limited to specific aspects and potential use cases of MEC
[1-2], for instance, overview, architecture and computation offloading, resource allocation, and mathematical frameworks. These
articles are very shallow in addressing challenges of MEC in the context of other 5G technologies. To the best of our knowledge,
there is no existing survey that is done to stimulate the integration of MEC and 5G technologies. The purpose of our work is to
provide a holistic overview of MEC and its potential use cases and applications. The main part of our work is a survey of up-todate
researches on the integration of MEC with 5G technologies including non-orthogonal multiple access, wireless power
transfer and energy harvesting, unmanned aerial vehicle, IoT, and network densification. We further summarize lessons learned
from state-of-the-art works and discuss challenges and potential future directions for MEC research. In the following figure, we
illustrate this survey by showing some MEC-based applications and listing 5G technologies discussed. Additionally, we provide
a system model to explain the problem of computation offloading and resource allocation in MEC systems [2]. |
