[Invited Talk] Direct digital RF transceiver technology for high-SHF fully digital Massive MIMO

(in English) Digital RF technology has been developed and applied to below 6GHz wireless applications. By replacing IC die consumptive RF / analog circuit blocks by digital signal processing / circuits, digital rich / small transceivers can be realized. Since this technology is based on the Nyquist theory, the operational frequency of the circuit is limited by the Nyquist frequency (= 1/2 of sampling clock frequency). In this paper, direct digital RF technology is proposed which utilizes the higher-order Nyquist Zones. The fabricated results of a 28 GHz-band receiver using a 1 GHz sampling clock will be shown. Since the combined transceiver architecture does not require an RF local oscillator and up/down converters, it is suitable for high-SHF/ millimeter-wave (MMW) multi-antenna systems such as digital beam forming (DBF) / multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transceivers for beyond 5G system
