A Technique for Measuring Modal Crosstalk at Splice Position Using 1-um-band Mode-Detection Optical Time Domain Reflectometry

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We have proposed an optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) that offers high-sensitivity detection of optical loss increases due to macro/micro-bending. The technique injects probe pulses below the cut-off wavelength of conventional single-mode fibers and measures the second-order mode of the backscattered light. In the technique, the crosstalk between the fundamental and second-order modes at a splice position is an important characteristic that closely related to the detection sensitivity of the optical loss increases. In this paper, we propose a novel technique for measuring modal crosstalk at a splice with axial misalignments using OTDR. We also experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed technique.
