A black sheet composed of metal-dielectric (MD) multilayer stacks is analyzed by the transmission-matrix method (TMM) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Combination of Fe and SiO2 is adopted for the study. We compare the results of the FDTD method with those obtained from the TMM, assuming the Drude dispersion model, and confirm a good agreement. We then discuss the effects of the thickness of dielectric layers on absorption characteristics, using a planar structure consisting of an MDMD stack. It is found that an absorption of more than 95% is obtained over a wavelength range of 0.35 to 0.87 μm. The absorption over the visible light spectrum is achieved regardless of polarization, even when the angle of incidence is increased to 50 degrees. Further study reveals that the addition of a square patch on top of the dielectric layer contributes to broadening the absorption characteristics. |
