Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, the research of visual prostheses that partially restore the visual function of blind patients by electrically stimulating the visual cortex is rapidly advancing. However, it is not well understood how to optimize the design of the cortical prosthesis in terms of the electrode arrangement on the cortex to induce a useful visual perception for blind patients. In the present study, we have developed a mobile type phosphene simulator consisting of a portable camera, back-pack PC and head mount display equipped with an eye tracking camera. Using the phosphene simulator, the phosphene patterns induced by multi-electrode stimulations were visualized in real time while the electrode arrangement on the virtual visual cortex was changed. Based on the simulation, the electrode arrangement to effectively restore visual perception was considered. The phosphene simulator developed in the present study is a useful tool to seek an optimum electrode arrangement in the cortical visual prosthesis.
