Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We experimentally investigated the preferred display location, character size, display color, and their road traffic dependence in the case of an automotive heads-up display (HUD). We used the windshield HUD simulator developed to evaluate the human machine interface of a HUD. Twenty-five students who possess a driver's license participated in the experiments. The results indicate that the preferred locations of speed and navigation indication were the depression angle of about 5° on highways, 7–8° on urban roads, and 8–9° on roads with traffic jam. Preferred character size was about 90 min arc for speed indication and about 60 min arc for navigation indication. The preferred character size did not depend on the road environment. Preferred colors for speed indication on highways were highly saturated green, highly saturated amber, and high-luminance white, and no significant difference was found among these three colors. Preferred color for navigation indication on highways was highly saturated green. It was significantly more preferred than the other colors.
