One of our research objects is to develop an application that provides questions using human head images and to provide it as a part of cognitive function training for elderly people at nursing care facilities. The application automatically crops a head region image from the input human image and creates a question image from the head region image. The head region image is an image of the head region that includes between the crown of the head and the chin. This paper proposes a method to extract the head region image from an arbitrary human image automatically. Most of the existing methods utilize color information and face a problem to fail to crop the head region image because of hair amount, skin color, face orientation, or background information. Therefore, the proposal method extracts the head region by modeling the facial architecture based on the facial outline and parts such as eyes and a nose without using color information. The proposal method enables us to extract a centralized head region image in a squared shape. Comparative experiments are conducted between the proposed method and a existing method using color information. The experimental results have revealed that the proposed method has succeeded to extract squared head region images in the probability of 94.5% or more. |
