Fundamental study on influence of intentional electromagnetic interference on IC communication

(in English) Low-Power Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (IEMI) has been reported, which causes malfunction without damaging the equipment by intentional electromagnetic interference with several volts. Until now, there have been reports of threats that cause temporary faults in processing inside the IC by Low-Power IEMI and extract secret keys. On the other hand, in this paper, we considered the possibility that faults occur in the data transmitted between ICs caused by Low-Power IEMI. If faults occur in data transmitted between ICs, malicious instructions different from regular instructions may be executed, which may be a new threat. Specifically, we constructed an experimental environment where faults in transmitted data can be observed. Then, by changing the frequency and amplitude, the conducted disturbance wave was applied to the device via the power supply line, and the influence on the data transmitted in the IC communication was evaluated. As a result of the experiment, when the frequency is low, and the amplitude is large in disturbance wave, it is observed that the probability of occurrence of faults in transmission data tends to be high. Moreover, it was confirmed that the larger the HW of the data to be transmitted, the more likely data faults occur.
