Study on Noise Suppression by Differential-type Microphone Array and Machine Learning of 2D Spectrum

(in English) This project aims to achieve noise suppression by processing of the output of a microphone array with an artificial neural network (NN). We used a differential-type array to avoid nonlinear distortions produced by a nonlinear system such as an NN. We regard the output of an array as an image, and the image is transformed into a 2-dimensional (2D) spectrum. In the spectrum, the frequency components of a noise sound are perfectly localized as direct current (DC) components along the spatial frequency axis. In this study, noise suppression was performed by spectral subtraction, after the DC components of noise were instantaneously estimated from the spectrum. As a result, the noise reduction performance of the proposed method with a 16-cm-long array was approximately 24 dB when the number of noise sources was one. Although the NN was trained by white noise, it was effective for speech and music signals as well as the white noise.
