Using word co-occurrences for visualizing research trends

(in English) Word co-occurrence statistics have been widely used to provide insight into the topic evolution in an arbitrary research field. To effectively visualize research trends using a set of academic papers, we present a methodology that highlights the rapid changes of co-occurrences over time. Specifically, we formulate a convex optimization framework that decomposes the matrix representing word co-occurrences into a smooth part and a sparse part: the former represents stationary research topics, while the latter corresponds to bursty research topics. In addition, to facilitate the understanding of research content, we present a new function that classifies each word into ``method-related'' or ``application target.'' Simulation results on synthetic data demonstrated that our approach achieved the best burst detection performance over four baseline methods. We also showed the effectiveness of our visualization in experiments on papers published in the past 16 years at two international conferences.
