Quality of Service Metrics for Intermittent Communication to Support Remotely Controlled Robotics Devices

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We usually assumes always-on connectivity for remotely controlling robotics devices. Out of coverage is an apparent problem for keeping connectivity to stably controlling robotics devices. Robot Operating System (ROS) is a recent standard for creating robotics devices. ROS interconnects functions of a robotics device using a Publish/Subscribe(Pub/Sub )type communication. This leads us to put parts of its functions on a cloud by virtualizing them to make it possible to control the robotics device remotely. In this paper, however, we add a new intermittency problem for connectivity due to handover process. We then propose a new Quality of Service metrics to evaluate such intermittency of networks.
