Temporal Segmentation of Continuous Facial Expressions Based on Time-series 3D Data Measured for Sparse Facial Feature Points

(in English) Temporal segmentation of a time-series sequence of facial expressions into utterance units remains a critically unsolved problem in facial expression analysis. Facial expressions must be analyzed based on 3D motion data because utterance generation is made by complex deformation of the face’s 3D shape. In this study, we recorded 3D position data of facial feature points by motion capture system. Furthermore, we conducted a dimensionality reduction of input time-series data and 5 Japanese vowels data to obtain low-dimensional parameters and calculated the Mahalanobis distance between the parameters. We examined the accuracy of the proposed segmentation method using mahalanobis distance.
