Analysis of effects of periodical disconnection on streaming applications

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper analyzes impacts of periodic communication disruption
on major streaming applications assuming an environment in which
broadband Internet is provided to high-speed trains with infrared
communication technologies.
The infrared transceivers are installed along railway at
300m intervals.
If the train runs at 300km/h, communication disruption occurs
at 3.6-second intervals due to handovers.
The purpose of this paper is to find the upper limit of disruption
time due to handover which keeps QoE (Quality of Experience) of
major streaming applications such as YouTube, Internet Radio, and
Skype, which will be used by passengers of trains, and to give
feedback on the design of the infrared transceiver.
Although similar analysis was done in 2014, re-analysis is necessary
because new protocols were adopted and new applications emerged since
then.
The analysis shows that
the upper limit of disruption time is as follows:
2.4 seconds at 3.6-second intervals for YouTube which uses HTTP over QUIC,
2.7 seconds for YouTube which uses HTTP over TCP,
2.7 seconds for Netflix,
2.1 seconds for Internet Radio, and
0.31 seconds for Skype.
As a result, it is found that the upper limit of the handover time
of the infrared transceiver is 0.31 seconds in the IP level.
