We experimentally observe THz emission from non-Bernal-stacked multilayer graphene thermally decomposed on a C-face SiC substrate by using Fourier transform far-infrared spectroscopy under pulsed near- and far-IR optical pumping having a wavelength of 2.3 μm and 10.6 μm, respectively. When the sample was pumped by the 2.3-μm far-IR laser a broadband emission ranging from 15 to 45 THz was observed correspondingly to the negative optical conductivity spectra originated by the pumping. When the sample was pumped by the 10.6-μm pulsed CO2 laser, on the contrary, no distinctive emission was observed. Theoretically the longer-wavelength far-IR pumping should help suppress carrier heating and resultant Auger processes, promoting the carrier population inversion thus increase the THz gain. The results suggest that the sample holds rather strong unintentional doping which may cause Pauli blocking to the 10.6-μm pumping photons. |
