Relation between Thermophysiological Response and Completion Rate in Marathon

(in English) It is essential to analyze the time evolution of body temperature elevation and water loss for evaluating the risk of heat-related illness in hot environment. In addition, one of the effects of resulting phenomena attributable to heat stress is the decreased performance of athletes. In this study, we focused on the analysis of the marathon athletes who are affected for a long-time and substantial heat stress. First, we computed the temperature rise and sweating simulating experiments reported in previous studies, and then evaluated the validity of our computational approach. We further computed the temperature rise and sweating simulating the race in the past World Athletes Championships and Olympics, and discussed correlation between their computed results, running speed as well as completion rate. Our results suggested that computed core temperature rise and sweating exhibit a better correlation with running speed than the ambient temperature and wet-bulb globe temperature. However, the correlation between completion rate and computed results, and ambient temperature was not statistically significant.
