Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Border Ownership (BO) tells which side of a contour owns a border, and it plays a fundamental role for the figure-ground segregation. Martin and von der Heydt have physiologically characterized attentional modulation on BO selective neurons for spike synchrony and firing rates. In order to understand the mechanisms of attentional modulation of responses on BO selective neuron, we propose a network model consisting of spiking neurons. To reproduce the observed physiological results, it was necessary to include two types of inhibitory neurons in our proposed model, SOM and VIP neurons, in addition to BO selective model neurons. Attention was mediated by the projection of VIP to SOM neurons, whereas visual inputs projected to both BO and SOM neurons. Simulations of the model indicated that attention decreased spike synchrony between pairs of BO model neurons, independent of the increase in their firing rates due to attention. These results suggested that the behavior of two types of inhibitory neurons underlie the attentional modulation during figure-ground segregation.
