Recently, Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) using speeches for communications have been researched by electroencephalograms (EEGs) and electrocorticogram (ECoG). In these studies, detecting speech onset and offset is the key to the classifications. Because extra EEGs that do not include features to classify or have components corrupted by noise lead to decrease the accuracy. In many of the previous studies, EEGs recorded during overtly speaking were used to identify the speech onset from their electromyography (EMG) and speech signal. On the other hand, in that of covertly speaking (silent speech BCIs, SSBCIs), the classifications need to detect the speech onset without the speech onset such as EMG and speech signal in overtly speaking. For the reason, we tried to detect a time interval that appears event-related potentials associated with covertly speaking using scalp-recorded EEGs by statistical methods including Gaussian mixture model-hidden Markov model (GMM-HMM) and bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM). |
